The Targis TM ( Cooled ThermoTherapy) Procedure
Targis TM therapy is a non-surgical, anesthesia-free treatment
performed in an outpatient treatment setting, and takes just 30 minutes. Patients
are treated as a office procedure returning home the same day as the treatment and quickly resume everyday
activities.
How the TargisTM System Works
The procedure, as depicted above, incorporates several steps. The catheter (also known
as the Microwave Delivery System) is inserted into the urethra. The balloon, located at
the very end of the catheter, is inflated to position the microwave antenna in the
prostate. Chilled water is circulated through the catheter to protect healthy urethral
tissue
While the chilled water is being circulated, the microwave power is started and the
diseased tissue in the prostate is heated. Heating is continued for one hour in order to
destroy the diseased tissue. After one hour, the microwave energy is turned off, while the
chilled water continues to circulate to protect the healthy urethral tissue from any
residual heat
At the completion of cooling, the procedure is finished and the treatment catheter is removed
and replace with a short term temporary catheter to prevent complications. Results (requires Acrobat
Reader)

This treatment involves microwaves to heat and destroy excess prostate tissue. TUMT takes
about an hour to complete and can be performed on an outpatient basis.
While TUMT does not cure BPH, it reduces urinary frequency, urgency, straining, and
intermittent flow. It does not correct the problem of incomplete emptying of the bladder.
Ongoing research will determine any long-term effects of TUMT and who might benefit most
from this therapy.
